Warn HN: DuckDuckGo is doing AI summaries for search results now?

7 points by Nullabillity ↗ HN
Searching for "steam deck gamescope"[0], the first search result looked suspiciously autosummarized[1]. Refreshing the page seems to generate new summaries every time, for the exact same query[2][3].

None of these quotes appear in the page itself[4], in the content or source code.

There is no warning that this is happening, nor can I see a way to turn it off. Curiously, it only seems to happen for the first result, the other results' summaries appear verbatim in their respective pages.

I see all these articles about the cost of running all these AI tools. I find it odd they'd do it here, for every result. It seems very expensive, while having very little pay off.
It is appears to be pulling random text segments from the page because I got text that included Steam Communities censorship. The text appears exactly the same as on the page so it is not autosummarised.
