Watching old soviet filmstrips and movies makes it clear that a lot of culture (fashion trends, etc.) was global, with maybe a slight delay crossing the "iron curtain". DPRK seems like a different story, but (even before Glasnost) the citizens of the USSR seemed to know much more about our pop culture than we knew about theirs.
