Ask HN: Why are Starlink satellites being named Starlink-30000+

5 points by js272 ↗ HN
Does anyone know why the latest starlink satellites that are being launched have names in the 30,000s now.

If you look at the latest satellite launches here: https://www.n2yo.com/satellites/?c=latest-launches you can see that the last one is STARLINK-31628.

When I google it it says that there are 5,504 Starlink satellites in orbit as of march 2024. Which basically fits with the numbers in some of the starlink trackers I found online.

There's a full satellite list that is outdated by about a year where the satellite numbers for Starlink start at 1000 and go up to 6126 and often skip certain numbers. https://www.ucsusa.org/resources/satellite-database

There is a list of all the starlink satellites on that N2YO site but for the life of me I can't get that page to fully load. https://www.n2yo.com/satellites/?c=52

Anyone have any insights?
