Not sure why, but this page is _grindingly slow_ on Firefox. Initial load, etc.

EDIT: TLS setup took 15s. Not sure whats up with that. Honeypot / content hack puzzle?

EDIT^2: It took some time to load, but after watching two, my thoughts are that the deep fakes are okay -- B on a grade scale. The mouth movement has some uncanny valley but the audio is spot on. Well done.

getting linked on HN is not dissimilar from a DDOS
Remember, folks: host your static content on CDN
The reason we self hosted the videos is for fear of takedowns. Even though it was posted on April Fool's Day and they are obviously satire, some of the people targeted have very thin skin and are fond of lawsuits.

Of course that was before it made the front page of hacker news :)

I'm sort of new to web content, networking, and front end. New as in I can grok dev tools but not root causes. What do you reckon was causing the TLS to take 15s?
Edit: site should be more stable now. Leaving the rest of the info in place just in case.

I was not expecting this to hit the front page.

Site is currently experiencing the "hug of death."

General information for new people: the HOPE hacker conference is this July 12-14 at St. John's University in Queens, New York City. 10% of all ticket sales for the month of April are donated to the EFF.

You can buy tickets at https://store.2600.com/products/tickets-to-hope-xv

Or just be patient until the site loads and you can watch the funny videos.

You can also watch the videos on the Youtube playlist at: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLcajvRZA8E08mP8_JddQQ...

Or check out @hopeconf on twitter/x, mastodon, and instagram, where the videos have been posted.

Will there be any livestreams? Have a great con!
Not only will there be livestreams, but there is a virtual ticket people can buy who can't attend in person but want to support:

Excellent!

"Virtual attendees will have access to all talks" leaves me wondering how much will be available to non-ticket holders (checked https://hope.net/faq.html also).

For HOPE 2020 and "A New HOPE" (2022), we had a matrix/element/whatever system set up just for ticket/virtual ticket holders. In addition to the ability to virtually hang out with other attendees, virtual attendees can join "rooms" that are linked into the talks, and have their questions related from the chat to the speaker. It's not the same as being in person, but makes the event more accessible for everyone who can't be there for whatever reason.

To clarify: the talks will be streamed live free for all. The virtual ticket is a way for people to support if they can't attend, but we want to make the information accessible to everyone.

I appreciate this approach, thankyou.
Just learned about H.O.P.E. which stands for "Hackers On Planet Earth", which is ironic because their events have never left the USA since '94 when they started.
How is this ironic
The implied meaning (global) is in strong contrast to the actual meaning (restricted to the USA).
But that's not irony. It's also a weird thing to complain about.

It happens in NYC and I know people who come internationally for HOPE. And even if they didn't, are US based attendees also not on planet earth?

The things people try and fet angry about...

Obviously it happens on planet earth and the visitors are hackers who live on planet earth. I don't think they care particularly if it's ironic, I think they just don't like the name and are looking for something to complain about. So let them complain.
I wasn't complaining, I just posted something I noticed considering I just learned about this organization. I went to check the tickets, then the history of the event, and noticed that it has always been held in the US.

Since HN in general likes to complain about names (OpenAI? more like ClosedAI AMIRITE??) I thought this was on topic.

I’m not complaining.

I’m trying to help you see why people can detect irony in the situation.

I certainly was not angry about it.

Please don’t respond to me further.

(“Tekla” did indeed go ahead and triple down. That’s troll behaviour.)

It's not ironic.
HOPE was founded during the heyday of HIP and other European conferences, which were prohibitively expensive for many Americans to attend. Last I checked, both Europe and New York were on planet Earth.

Furthermore, it's not restricted, plenty of people attend from all over. NYC has some of the cheapest airfares of all international flights, so while it's undeniably more expensive than a domestic flight, it's the least-worst option in most cases.

I was answering the question of why there is (genuine) irony that a person can find in the name. A lot of people have trouble detecting irony.

Showing that something can easily be interpreted in a non-ironic way does not, in any way, disprove that a thing can also be interpreted in an ironic way.

Please explain how its ironic.
The last time I checked, while many wish it weren't, USA is part of planet Earth. Though, it has been awhile since I confirmed.
Lovely and typical US-centric mentality, not even gonna bother explain. You're right! You're the best nation! Why even host somewhere else?
Lovely and typical US-antagonist mentality, not even gonna bother explain. You're right! The US is a horrible place and should never ever be the butt of humor nor where anything global can be centered because . Why ever host in that crazy place? /s

Look, the org is centered in the US, no? And has global aspirations? So why yuck their yum?

Trivia: There are HOPE flyers in the movie “Hackers”. Cereal Killer’s real name is Emmanuel Goldstein, who is the maybe-fake reactionary leader in “1984”, and from there, the pen name of 2600 Magazine’s editor. 2600 sponsors HOPE.

Also: I was able to get my work to buy me a lifetime subscription to 2600 from my personal education budget. Just in case you were looking for a way to spend yours down.
