Of course they could fly. Evolution won't build 'planes' unless those planes can fly.
Secondly, just because something is big and heavy doesn't mean it can't fly. Boeing and Airbus have some 787s and 380s to sell you, if you have enough money.
I just couldn't believe all those 'scientists' of the late 1800s when they said 'heavier than air' flight was physically impossible. Obviously they'd never bothered to look out of their windows to see thousands of heavier-than-air birds flying all day, every day.
For all their power, the moment birds have launched their legs are effectively useless - they're just dead weight to be hauled around until it's time to land.
