Ask HN: Getting into technical Manager/Director roles if weak technically?

We hear it all the time: Managers aren’t technical and don’t need to be. Yet, I get blocked entering management positions because I lack the technical proficiency to lead. How have you broken into, and successfully grown into leading teams?
