This is cool, but I really wanted to be able to zoom.
It is pinchable on mobile (Safari).
Didn't work for me on Firefox Android for some reason.
Same os/browser, but it works here. Weird. :{
Actually I can zoom in little, but not out. Maybe there is no zoom out?
Cars never turn!
If you watch for long enough they also sometimes fail to stop. So just like a real city too.
They don't need to: if you keep going straight in an infinite city you'll eventually reach a place that's virtually indistinguishable from the one you intended.

And just wait until you reach the library!

And even if you go to a specific place in an infinite city, the entire trip will require at most one turn, an infinitesimally rare event. No wonder we never catch them in the act.
No humans walking around makes me sad :( A really cool project, albeit worrying that 50% of the real estate of Infinitown is roads only a couple of cars drive on ;) When zoomed in all the way I wish there was some LOD meshing to provide longer view distance, would make it feel much more immersive in that sense.
Pretty much like the real world in modern cities then…
*modern North American cities

ftfy

If only… I live in France, and lived a bit in the UK and suburbs are like that in Europe too.
Grid layout, only cars around. Yep, the USA
A handmade ever-growing version that has plenty of people in it is this one which I recently stumbled about.

This is very cool but not infinite which is understandable because specific things is used.
Neither is infinitown, but I get what you mean.
Sometimes I think I have plenty of patience, reasonable talent, and a strong drive for excellence.

But then I see people doing things like this.

I find it kind of interesting and cozy to “peoplewatch” and this really scratches that itch.
I’d like to drive one of the cars please. Preferably with heavier traffic, working traffic lights and collision detection.
I was going to suggest locking the camera onto a car to see it travel through the city, but driving it would be even better.
These clouds look like flying rocks.
Reminds me of the clouds from Vivarium
Not a town, a nightmare.
Half of the blocks should be replaced by parking lots to make it more realistic. Then remove all but one pedestrian crossing per road.
That’s cool. Do you have the source code? I’ll definitely have to study it.
I remember seeing this years ago. While trying to recreate this I learned so much and had lots of fun. I still love scrolling through the city to this day!
there was a project[0] that did a similar display over real openstreetmap data, sadly the demo[1] seems to be offline now, but there's a video of it[2].

It contains the whole world? Where do the 3d data and meshes come from?
Wow, I have many osm 3D tools but nothing has come close the pretty-ness of that one!
Author here. It's amusing to see this resurfacing today since it was released 7 years ago.

I suppose it's due to the recent launch of our latest WebGL experience: https://equinox.space

It's an immersive space survival experience with interactive storytelling. Hope you like it!

EDIT: HN thread regarding Equinox: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40113013

For just running in my browser this was very impressive - Kudos to the team behind it :D
Equinox is impressive! Just want to say y'all do amazing work. The feel and tone of these experiences is great. Much more than the standard tech demo.
Hey! Just wanted to say I loved browserquest when it came out, and it was a material influence for me to get into web development. I had a lot of fun tinkering with the code and understanding it
On this computer it has pretty bad framerate on Firefox, but it works great on Chrome (Linux)

This project makes me want to play SimCity 2000 again. Congrats, nice execution.
Interesting that nowadays we think that a prototypical city must have cars, but not necessarily pedestrians and public transport.
Just judging by fan speed on me anchiant Core i3, this out-performs github's sign-up flow by a substantial margin.
