It sounds like they’re walking the dogs on a basically public nature trail that runs through Prince’s property. In which case, in the abstract, I am fine with dogs being off leash.
This is one of those stories where it’s impossible to take a side without accurate context. It could be that the dogs are actually menacing, it could be that Prince isn’t happy about an easement on his land and is using this as a pretext to harass people who rightfully use it to walk.
The greater context is that neighbours have lodged objections to plans by Prince for a large multi story house on a block of about 1.5 acres or so (IIRC) that's likely not the block with a trail easement (or maybe it is) but it's the block with the neighbours that have dogs.
Everybody is cashed up, some more than others, and there are several paid up media PR pieces that seem to reflect one side or another.
You're correct to avoid this without deeper context, I'm in Australia and wouldn't touch it even if local - there's scope here for everybody and anybody to be either truly aggrieved with cause or a petty vindictive asshole; one of those "best avoided even if you're friends either party or another" situations.
I’ve been menaced so many times by unleashed dogs while jogging on public trails and seen enough smaller people get bitten that I don’t think dogs should ever be unleashed in public areas not specifically intended for them.
I used to have a dog and totally get how nice it would be not to worry about leashes, but human safety has to come first.
Not sure why this is an interesting story for HN, as it seems like a dispute between neighbors. And it seems like a worthwhile lawsuit because in most places, even on trails, you can’t have pets roaming freely off leash. This has been getting more common though. I’ve noticed an increase in off leash dogs near me and find that dog owners are increasingly entitled about it, always claiming their dogs are friendly when they run up to us. Sorry I won’t blindly trust in your dogs’ training and don’t want my children maimed in your experiment with going off leash illegally.
If I had a dollar for every "friendly" dog that jumped or lunged at me or my wife while running or cycling even when leashed where the owner was shocked (shocked!) at pooch's behavior, I'd have a decent sum. Nowhere near enough to live in Park City though. :-) So hard to tell from this he said/she said account who is in the wrong. Definitely a slow news day.
Same. Unleashed dogs have charged me while walking. They've blocked my path while hiking, barking and snarling. They've chased me while cycling, literally snapping at my heels.
I don't understand people who think dogs are harmless.
I do think aggressive, menacing behavior from dogs should be treated as seriously as similar human behavior would be.

Edit: neither time did I engage or pay attention to either dog.
