It's a sign of the times that pop stars and the appetites of mob consumerism may be construed as "elites" with a "sacred project" of destroying wholesome country music values.
This is the difficulty with our modern identity and sense of opposition. We can't really tell who the them is whoever they are. Anyone not on the same page will do.
