I found this to be kind of funny. It's clear that the people providing content to Stack Overflow (SO) were always at least tacitly agreeing to allow SO to monetize their content. So SO decides to sell access to OpenAI to train their models and that has some people upset.[1]

The response of our Mastodon poster was to update the content they produced to be "more general", while interpreting "more general" in a very liberal way. SO reverts the changes and suspends the account for a week. Sort of like punishing your child by putting them in time out for using a loophole in the house rules to make you look bad.

It will be interesting to see how this sort of feud evolves. I know a number of people who are disappointed with the SO decision (although not so creative in expressing their displeasure :-)) and it feels like another example of a "web 2" company/enterprise shooting itself in the foot.

[1] I think this is 'upset' in the same way that people discover an answer they gave on one of the various -overflow sites helped a person or organization they don't approve of achieve some positive goal for itself. It is always a risk that when you publish something, a 'bad actor' may use it for personal gain.
