Isn't this super old news...?
The pop-ups seem to be new.

> Since last June, X owner Elon Musk has claimed that the words “cis” and “cisgender” are “considered slurs” on the platform. But only more recently have these words triggered full-screen pop-ups warning users that their post might be a violation of platform rules.

It’s weird since it’s just a technical term that fits the majority of people. The reason that most are unfamiliar with it is just that being transgender has been stigmatized historically and therefore not been talked about much and when you assume everyone is something, you don’t need the term for it.

It’s kind of like of heterosexual was considered a slur suddenly when the discussion of homosexual rights started gaining speed. Because of old people angrily stating “I’m not a heterosexual! I’m normally sexual damnit! We don’t need a term for that!”

Leaving aside other flagged terms, I have seen people take offense to being called cis or cisgender, so if the concern is to avoid people feeling attacked in the public sphere, it seems as valid as other similar protections.

I'm not sure why it's at Musk's "whim". Maybe I missed that he personally made that call in the linked article?

This is a good point. It is possible that the owner of the website declaring cisgender to be a slur and the website declaring cisgender to be a slur are entirely unrelated
It would definitely fit Musk's hands-off management style at X.

(One really hopes the /s is not necessary here.)

One should avoid type-casting people. It is tantamount to being a slur all by itself. As far as discussing Elon Musk's whims, let's not feed the troll.
