Tldr the activist put his personal iCloud email as recovery on his activist protonmail account and protonmail had to hand it over.
It seems they can’t share anything else than meta data and whatever data you give them, that would include billing information I suppose.
According to the article they only hand over data from their Email service, so using their VPN in conjunction would be useful to hide some metadata. Unfortunately I think that if one uses the same account for email and vpn the billing information even if only used for the vpn service would be linked to the email and handed over.
