What's the catch with programs like Buildspace?

Saw on twitter a few of the yc companies that got in this batch participated in "Buildspace". I got rejected and have never even done any startup-related programs/accelerators/incubators/whatever they call themselves, wondering if it increase your chances or if it's just a waste of time.

Appreciate anyone with personal experience/opinions to share.
