Back in the 90's, VW cancelled a friend's warranty after the service center found he had replaced his valve stem caps with ones that matched the color of his car's paint. So yes, I can imagine.
That "far cry" depends on just how much warranty work the VW needed. And if VW had to settle for valve stem caps, then they may have been feeling lot$$$$ of motivation to find something.
