One thing I sometimes see in Show HN posts is when the post is made without any sort of explanatory text. Just a link to the thing that's being shown.

I think that a good Show HN post should include an explanation of what's being shown, why it's worth showing, what the goal of thing being shown is, and so forth.

First and foremost, follow the specific HN guidelines for Show HN postings (https://news.ycombinator.com/showhn.html).

Don't write your explanatory posting(s) in your Show HN thread in a way that looks like trashy advertising. If it is something you personally built, surely there is some interesting background about why you you were inspired to create it or the way that it was constructed that can be shared. If your Show HN looks like merely an ad, it will be treated like merely an ad.
