Ask HN: Google migrated Google Workspace billing to Squarespace, now what?

23 points by jorisboris ↗ HN
I was aware that Google domains would move to Squarespace, and migrated my domains to Cloudflare.

But now my domains linked to a Google Workspace are being migrated and the billing goes through Squarespace as well. I assume I cannot move Google Workspace billing to Cloudflare?

Do they have human support? Tell them to move to CF or else you quit.
What are good alternatives?

I’ve been in the dark about this transition and am in the middle of classes so I haven’t had time to look into it. Just saw 3 dozen square space emails about transfers…

For domains? I really like porkbun.
Cheap, fast, highly configurable. And it feels friendly. I love it.

Usually I search domains on Namecheap, but buy them on porkbun.

Their search is downright terrible. That's the only real negative I've found, aside from not having a few gTLDs, but that's just the game.
+1 for Porkbun. Have been happy there for many years. Though they don't have some country TLDs like .de.
I wanted to like Porkbun but failed to buy a .io domain through them because of technical problems on their end. Their website is also a bit programmer-y and I wouldn't recommend them to anyone non-technical. (Eg UX of login flow includes "Leave password blank if using a passkey or passwordless login.")

I ended up using http://hover.com

> Their website is also a bit programmer-y

This is a feature, not a bug.

Porkbun is the least sketchy site I’ve ever encountered in the domains business.

I moved my domains over to Cloudflare.
I’d recommend against this if you are using Cloudflare for DNS or Proxying. If they decide to close your account then you’ll lose access to your domains too. Whereas if you register them elsewhere, you’ll at least have a path to recovery in the event of Cloudflare account closure or catastrophic failure.
+1 here... a few weeks ago, it wouldn't have been nearly the concern for me, where today it definitely is.
This is a really good point and something I hadn't considered. Thanks
Is this a thing? Can companies really "steal" your domain names?

Yep, GoDaddy and NameCheap are reliable registrars with good support and fast updating.

No, but you can move it back to Google. You can then move the domain itself wherever you want.

I’m trying this indeed, but it seems I have to go through Squaresoft support for this

OK cool

What? Do I get it right if you're asking if you can keep your Google Workspace but give the money to Cloudflare instead of Google...? (No, Cloudflare is not a financial services company last I checked)

And what does this have to do with migrating your domains..? (After migrating domains you can just delete your Google Workspace if you don't need it anymore = no Google billing consideration)

Seems your post is missing some detail or I'm misreading

My whole life is in documents in that Google Workspace

I once accidentally deleted a GSuite 5 years ago and all documents were gone and non recoverable. I’m very careful now when playing with this subscription.

For any crucial data, you do want backups, outside of Google. It could become accessible or removed due to other factors outside of your control.
I really hope you have backups for your whole life…no cloud service is reliable enough to trust as your only copy.
