I am curious about this freenet naming fiasco that has happenend recently. Apparently there was some infighting in the freenet community on the mailing list.
My understanding, no guarantees: Ian founded Freenet and after some time effectively abandoned it, while it was further developed by multiple volunteers in an active community. About 20 years later, he created a new project named locutus and renamed it to Freenet, forcing the existing and active community to abandon that name, without asking them. They chose the new name hyphanet by the way. This was possible because the name belonged to some Freenet foundation all along, which also had apparently lost contact to the active community.
