Ask HN: What does your dev team look like?
What do you feel works? What is broken and why?
Do you feel your team is on track to complete its goals? Do you know what those goals even are?
I'm asking because I was recently asked how I would spin up a new dev team from scratch. Mostly the subject was restricted to development tools and practices, but I was more fascinated by the idea of creating a new team and assigning the roles for people.
I've also been reading a lot about naval combat in World War II, and how various organizational deficiencies in the US and Japanese navies led to losses and setbacks. This got me thinking about how in the military you have people trained specifically to be leaders.
Do you have people in your team who fall into the Lieutenant role? Sergeant? Do you feel they are in the wrong role, or are they trying to be both sergeant and lieutenant?
