Having looked at the HN API it seems ill suited to direct access from a web app, for example changes are reported every 30 seconds - miss them and they are gone. And that kind of access could end up placing an unnecessary load on the API. So it comes down to a more backend heavy solution.
you are missing the point its to demonstrate PWA across different frameworks

I don't know why there is so much pushback against it its actually very useful to avoid building mobile apps

Not from me. As you can tell I have actually tried it out. Most of what I make is web apps.
