Ask HN: How do you find projects or ideas to generate money by yourself?

I have been self-employed for the past 3-4 years and I mostly developed blockchain technologies (back-end & front-end). I realized that this environment was mostly about creating hype for a quick buck and I got bored of it.

For the past months, I have been hired through short-term contracts to help a company to build a framework for stochastic simulations like Monte Carlo. Although, I got tired of working for someone else.

I have a diversified background in mathematics and computer science but I have no idea how I can generate money by myself without depending on an employer.

Anyone has ever been in such a place where they want to build stuff and generate money by themselves without depending on an employer?
