On earth, we get microbes surviving in underwater volcanoes or the hot waters around them. It's a tiny portion of life on earth, but there's no reason we couldn't see similar elsewhere.

The Horta. In Shatner's book (70s IIRC) he says that the props staff went to the producer and said they could not make a Horta for under a grand. The producer told them, ya get a hundred bucks.
