I so glad to see these ultra wealthy anti-democracy crusaders having just a little bit of sunshine sent their way, given how enormously oversized they've been pouring their influence and capital into shaping America.
Really dig James Pogue's recent in-depth write-up for Vanity Fair. I think people just have no idea, and we're starting to see where the post-MAGA rallying points are, what motives there are buying their way into power. Title & slug,
> Inside the New Right, Where Peter Thiel Is Placing His Biggest Bets
> They’re not MAGA. They’re not QAnon. Curtis Yarvin and the rising right are crafting a different strain of conservative politics.
There's all sorts of dimensions of this Valley Ideology. I do think this election has gotten a much bigger tent full of ultrawealthy activated, not just because of the opportunity for power (& grift) but also because the FTC & Linda Khan are the first time in 40 years government has started trying to keep the scales from tilting all the way towards capital. That there now is anyone out there trying to protect consumers/the 99%/humanity has these folks outraged & scared, totally willing to do anything to bring us back the reign of unchecked capitalism.
But beyond wanting to not be hindered by a FTC that has anti-trust, these are the people that want to build their own city in California that they own.
(Apologies, to be clear, I meant sunshine as in "sunshine is the best disinfectant," as in shedding light on a dark corner. That should have been more directly said
(Apologies, article is from 2022, not 2024. (But only ever more apt.))
Also loving this other recent submission!
> The Man Behind Trump’s VP Pick: It’s Worse Than You Think
> While J.D. Vance has his own controversies, his close connection to billionaire Peter Thiel, who is poised to have unprecedented influence in a new Trump administration, should deeply unsettle every American who cares about freedom, privacy and reining in the surveillance state.
Pete Buttigieg: "We've made it way too complicated; it's super simple. These are very rich men who have decided to back the Republican Party who tends to do good things for very rich men."
I hope a proper roll call is taken of the businesses these people represent so consumers can vote with their dollars. Elon is basically burning Tesla to the ground[1] as the public face of the neo-reactionary oligarchs, but his peers are getting off far too easy.
