Ask HN: Practicality of an idea vs. entertainment value?

What do you think?

I've personally been working on a little side project for the past few months that really has no practical use, but is instead solely for entertainment value. When I browse HN, however, I see a lot of practical, useful ideas that actually attempt to solve problems. Basically, I'm just curious as to everyone's thoughts on the subject: do you think practicality is more valuable, or entertainment? Are they completely different?
