I wonder what they mean by "orgasm." As in, does this device just make you physically "pop off," which could be mildly uncomfortable and not super pleasurable, or does it actually make the user feel intense pleasure?

Sorry if those aren't the best words to describe what's going on.

“Pop off”?

Brings a new meaning to “pop off to the shops”.

Probably not. The "pop off" tech you are speaking of is highly developed and matured by farmers. How do you get semen from a bull for example. I believe it is called an "electroejaculator" and involves electrocuting the prostate directly, through the anus and rectum of course. I use mine on my husband all the time, it's quite lovely if you're bold enough.

The technology is of course used in humans e.g. https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/cdrh_docs/pdf/K962379.pdf

That's exactly what I was wondering, thank you.

I had never considered the possibility of electrocuting the prostate like that to extract semen.

Sounds like a good time! Now I'm off to eBay...
The South Park guys made a bizarre movie about a device like this (which was a beam weapon), "Orgazmo". Possibly one of the weirdest movies of the 90's which was worth watching.
The other would be Larry Nivens Puppeteer tasp. It was a remote device that could be used to directly stimulate the brain pleasure center.

The dark side of it was that it could be so intense, “perfect pleasure”, as to ruin someone’s life as they tried to achieve it again.

Similarly the “drug” of choice were “wire heads” who had a wire connected to their pleasure center. Abuse of which led folks to just plug in and starve to death. But it was not as intense as the tasp.

There was also a scene in the movie Strange Days, which has the plot that in the future memories can be recorded and then replayed (even by other people) like movies. In the scene someone gets their brain fried by having a short loop of pleasure played for hours on end.
Love that film. Except for the device, the rest of the film felt of the era.
Interesting. The movie Brainstorm (1983) had the exact same kind of scene.
There was also an episode of DS9, where one of the characters had had an implant in the brain hooked up to the pleasure centre that was intended to be activated to resist torture, but they ended up just leaving it on.
One of the better episodes if you ask me. Some great character development going on.
Not sure whether the word come from there, but sleepers from W. Allen has it in 1973, one of his most fun slapstick movie of that period.
Looks like there's not been much progress on this since the article.

Here's a more recent article I found, if anyone's curious: https://melmagazine.com/en-us/story/orgasmatron-thomas-stuar...

(Plot spoilers, there's not been any developments on this since TFA.)

Both articles lack consideration of the Kundalini Chakra in tantric context, and how that relates to the nerves and their interconnections in the region of the fornices of the vagina.

BAM! There are your buttons :)
