How to make GitHub repo more visible?

3 points by ParrotUI ↗ HN
I created a project and I really wonder how to make my repo more visible. It does not matter if a person likes my repo or not but i just wonder how can lots of people see my project. Any suggestions?

Use tags. Post about it online.
Which platforms should i post on?
The best way to increase your visibility will likely be to post your project in communities relating to that project. I don’t know of any magic shortcuts for this, except for paid ads.
Open Source your work. Then face the reality that if you can't get people to see it, and most people don't have the means and time for it, they won't see it, they won't even know it exists. Google doesn't help you at all, you have zero chance in the search results. Github also doesn't help you at all in disseminating your work. They just host and process your code.

Without money you are fucked. That's the harsh reality. You open source your work, for others, AND YOU HAVE TO SPEND MONEY to market it to people :D. And who has enough money? Companies. Those will use your work, and give back nothing.

So, what average people don't have? Enough money to market their software which was built on other FOSS software. Since each and every platform after some initial openness is closed down for the people. You don't get to the table without spending money. Meaning: open source is a scam. You work for some limelight, because you are naive, and benevolent, while the vultures steal your work, your livelihood and your ideas.

Open source is a scam. Stop posting your ideas and your hard work for others for some illusion of a reputation. Ask money for it, create your own license and patent your ideas, it's not a sacrilege. You can do whatever you want with the money flowing in, like buy your freedom.

Who are your target users?

I think more important than how many people see the repo is whether they click away in 5 seconds.

To you, your app is amazing and it's obvious why people want it.

To everyone else.... We have no idea what it does and you only get about ten seconds to convince people they should spend any more time reading about it.
