This story is very similar to what happened to my own elderly father back in 2020 that I have mentioned here previously. In my father's case he searched for "Apple support Canada" and got a phishing ad as the top result that looked real. Thanks to Google blurring the lines between ads and search results in recent years, it is now far easier to confuse people that don't know what to look for. The scary part is that in my father's case, I could perform the exact same search from the same wireless network and get different results. I strongly believe that hyper-targetted ads like this are resulting in harm to vulnerable populations, and that ads should be shown to a diverse audience, so that more competent people can notice and report them.
