Social media has a role but the entire right-wing media and conservative party has been scapegoating immigrants for their own criminal looting of the UK for decades.
They're still doing it openly today after riots and attempted murders. They have nothing else to offer voters.
The new government bears a big responsibility for the riots.
There has been growing frustration with high immigration for decades now. Brexit happened partly because of that. The Tories have lost partly because of that (they were "talking the talk" but enabled the highest level of immigration on record after Covid).
Then, in their very first month the new government dismantled many flagship initiatives of the previous government. Whether those initiatives were effective is irrelevant, the message sent is that the new government was even softer on immigration and I think this increased frustration and anger to the point that a spark was all it took, as is often the case.
Of course The Guardian will find culprits anywhere except at home...
Obviously this is not to condone or excuse violence but the causes of such events are always deeper than "social media" or than overusing the "far right" card.
