Tell HN: EndeavourOS kept randomly freezing until I upgraded to Linux-RC
https://www.asus.com/laptops/for-home/vivobook/asus-vivobook-s-14-oled-m5406/ But this is the type of thing that would probably get a normal person to buy a Mac. I'll admit I was tempted.
First I tied to install Linux Mint, I wasn't able to finish the install and now anything Ubuntu based refuses to boot with a weird TOK issue.
Cool, time to try the Arch ecosystem . First up is Manjaro. Things are working great, and then it started to randomly freeze on me, including once during an interview ( we mutually agreed I wasn't a good fit before the actual freeze though). The actual Zoom call was still working while my UI was completely frozen.
To be clear, I generally prefer Linux in my day to day use. It doesn't inject ads into my start screen ( Ubuntu is coming close though). I retain some aspect of control over my own hardware.
After reading about the issues with Manjaro I figured they might of did something weird to Arch that's causing my issues. To be exact the UI would completely freeze randomly. You might get lucky and get to enjoy a full 30 minutes before this happens.
Switched to EndeavorOS( I'm not hardcore enough to go straight to Arch) and it got worse. For some reason the Live installer was fine, but I found myself completely unable to use the computer for more than a minute or so once installed.
So I had to boot into TTY and install linux-rc. This was not a straight forward process in anyway. AKM didn't even list rc.
So after installing rc, everything basically works. Can't figure out how to get that new fancy Zed editor to work, but aside from that I'm happy.
I will say that I'm planning on using my old M1 MacBook Air for my next interview though.
