An example for economic "region" would be the northwest county of Indiana which is the same time zone as Chicago, one state over in Illinois, while Indiana is otherwise one hour ahead.
China is the worst offender. It must be terrible during winter when you live on the far western side of the country, and the sun rises at noon or something :/
OP has a misleading premise, and the top comment thread is focusing on a less relevant detail. More relevant comments focus on the longitude, rather than the straight-line distance.
