Honestly, I don't mind personally because I rarely use any of the features which have been hidden away. Most things I need to do those rare times are available through the command palette anyways. Happy for them to be able to get rid of the legacy code they have.
They are making it the default, but the old interface will be available as a plug-in for at least a year, and maybe longer if there is continued demand for it
87% of their users are already using the new UI, according to them. Personally I love it. It's not as clean as VScode but a lot better than the old Jetbrains.

I’ve been using the new UI since shortly after it was released. I knew the day was going to come they would retire the old one so I figured I’d just start getting used to it.
It’s been long enough I don’t really remember the difference but I’m quite happy in the new one at this point.
