The problem is that the libertarian ,free society is loudly advocating against itself. Every scammer, every unhoused mad vagabund on the street, every druggie parking the fallout in other lifes, every hacker subverting order for personal gain from the suckers, every rights but ni duties hands out leaflets against life and let life.
Still no excuse to vote Nazi though.
The sad truth is we bribed humanity with surplus and destroyed habitat. And now we start shrinking to adapt to a persistent shape, we found out what humanity is made of in times of crisis. And its mostly ugly tribalism and shizoid paranoid stories. No poor hippy utopias, sorry. Has been like that always and forever if you are willing to abandon the idea of progress. Its now the social prothesisbuilders vs our worser nature. The panopticon of cellphones/ social networks vs powerabuse and mobrule as prevalent wherever things run out.
Repudiating Nazis is one of the easiest things for a reasonable person to do in any reasonable circumstance. Even the term "Nazi" is basically synonymous with malevolent evil at this point in history. It's a major moral failing when any individual fails this test.

I think that the main issue is that Furet is the last explicitly conservative historian, and while he was great, probably the greatest, and he made the entire field better, he was also not Anglo, and specialized in a very French topic. The issue is that while conservative historians exist (and thrive, Furetians are respected, at least here), they mostly do not focus on what anglo conservatives think they should be focused on. Also, as an academic field, history is way, way less political these days than people believe, and disagreements are mostly about specifics. Basically history is used more by politics than ever, while politics are less present in the field than ever.
Anyway, imho this is because a hunger exist among conservatives to also have intellectual representation, not just a political one. Sadly this make this Nazi quite rich, but imho a lot of people following him don't agree with his overall politics (I hope).

The only expansion I found of this acronym is "recommended if you like"; not sure that was the intent here? I do agree with the thesis, though.
