Ask HN: Where do avatars like this come from? (avatars.githubusercontent.com)

I see avatars like this one very often on GitHub but I really don't know where they come from. It seems a corner of the internet culture totally unknown to me, probably dating back to the previous generation of programmers (early 2000s).
