Ask HN: Where are we with gaze detection?

I explored this space about four years ago and found a few open-source and useable solutions for gaze detection, but they were not precise enough to solve the problem I was attempting.

Have there been any breakthroughs lately? If I wanted to hack on this again, where should I begin looking?

I wonder if, for this field, the larger solution is scene detection. Actors, what they are looking at, who they are talking to, (and what they are saying).
