[EDIT] - Before (if) this gains too much traction, apparently it's simply being made more difficult [0]. I still think this bodes poorly for long-term openness of MacOS, but I want Apple to dig their own grave instead of their defenders always being able to say "It's not as bad as reported"

[Original comment] I've seen numerous people on both sides of the "MacOS is becoming more locked down and more iPhone-esque"; I think this is a pretty solid indicator of where MacOS is headed, and how that debate will end.

The article linked in the post mentions specifically 15.1, which released a few days ago. The article in your comment is from August 2024.

>Starting with MacOS Sequoia 15, the easy bypassing of this feature with e.g. holding Control when clicking the application icon is now no longer an option, with version 15.1 disabling ways to bypass this completely.

Because the article from August 2024 is still correct.

In 15.1 you can still go to the system settings/privacy and click the "open anyway" button for the application there and it will still launch.

Source: I am on 15.1 and just downloaded a completely new unsigned app and opened it successfully.

15.0 already gave me cold shower with this. I still hope that this 15.1 issue is just bug but writing is already on the wall. People were telling this when gatekeeper was introduced but I was saying that it could be easily disabled.

Many people do not like macos but like the HW. I always liked both but mpb M1 is probably my last mac.

If we lose desktops as a platform to run arbitrary code without permission from the giants then we'll be in a very dire place.
This seems like the first step to forcing the walled garden model onto laptops and desktops. People should be able to use their computers however they want.
I think it's a long game for them and normalizing the loss of freedom on mobile platforms was the major step. By now most Apple users are conditioned to find this acceptable.

This is really disappointing. You'd expect the opposite (the platform becoming more capable and versatile) but I guess Apple's understanding of "better" is not the same.
