Cock.li will shut down before becoming complicit in crimes against its own userbase by duress of any government or organization.

For nearly 11 years, cock.li has remained one of the only public e-mail providers to allow registration as anonymously as a library card. The fact that it's still possible to get an e-mail address as easy as 20 years ago is a fact widely hated by international governments; at least the parts of those governments which have dedicated countless resources to target our service, our team, our family, and our friends with illegal surveillance, bad-jacketing, organized disinformation, and much worse.

A combination of these illegal tactics have become so serious that the site is now in grave danger.

The only way it's been possible for cock.li to weather this and stay online is thanks to the dedication of our entire lives to this bit. Our small team of 3-5 people have had our lives permanently altered and our stability sacrificed so Internet users worldwide can more-or-less enjoy the comfort of being able to access e-mail without requiring a phone number or other surveillance document.

Despite the constant attacks on the service and our personal lives, no one directly involved has ever been paid in 11 years for their work on cock.li. The personal costs of this volunteer work add up over a lifetime, and as we get older we've slowly taken steps back to compensate, when we should have been stepping up.

Stepping up is exactly what's needed right now, and we're here to do it. These recent issues have forced us to take leave from our jobs to make time just to keep the wheels spinning. I hope you can understand that is why, for the first time ever, I'm asking you to donate directly to the people who make cock.li possible.

Your donation will make a real difference by telling us to use the money where it will help the most right now. We have a sizable war chest for legal expenses that has never once been used to pay us for our work. Problem is, if we can't make time to put that war chest to work, what good is it? We believe cannibalizing this fund to offset our lost time would put cock.li in a worse position, so by creating a new fund we can make it clear what we're doing while keeping our legal funds secure.

It shouldn't surprise you that the people who are so passionate about this service are not profiteers or business people. We are private, unpaid individuals who don't want to see one of the last great liberties of this Internet fall victim to the criminal and violent attempts to shut it down. If these critical threats force us to change the world to ensure e-mail remains recognized as a human right, we won't hesitate to do it.

We never once asked for personal donations specifically in the hopes that if this moment ever came, our userbase would appreciate that we were able to make it this long on passion alone, and trust that your donation will make the best possible impact.

There is much work to be done. I will keep you updated as much as I can. Thank you very much for your consideration.

thought they also sell vps, mate? what happened with the business?
The reliability was pretty bad. Also i found it burdensome that it only accepted bitcoins instead of money.
I wonder what countries were involved in the tactics like intimidation that they describe on the page and if its been discussed/made public elsewhere
Interesting they have tried to do the same thing Assange did with the kill switch torrent:

> In the 2022 film `COCKCON 2020 (2019)`[0], a 250MB encrypted file was hidden in a second video track of the 1080p release. You can download this film here[1]. I don't know if the encryption key will ever be released, but if it does, you'll want quick access to that file. > > Furthermore, two more files are released today, 2024-11-12: ins10.luks[2] (555MB) and ins11.luks[3] (64MB). Please download these torrents and seed them as long as you can. Please consider your privacy when seeding.

I don't remember Assange every releasing the key to his?

From their domain list:

    horsefucker.org
Fancy!

I'm really grateful for services like this. What they note in this piece is absolutely true; it is really hard to just get an e-mail address anonymously these days. There are partial solutions like masked e-mail (Fastmail, Firefox, etc.) and sometimes one of those shady disposable e-mail websites has domains which aren't blocked, but just taking out a clean e-mail address somewhere is at best a lengthy process if they require some form of SMS confirmation (where you then use shady SMS receiving websites with low success rates for each listed number).

Sometimes you just want to interact with some service from an online identity not linked to your private person. Reasons vary, but there are plenty of valid, legal reasons to do so (lack of trust, sensitive topic, research, etc.). I think being able to do that is quite important for society, but there sure are a lot of actors out there who wish this wasn't possible at all!

>horsefucker.org

I am 99% sure this is was created by/for 4chan My Little Pony fans who did not want to be associated with bronies anymore and therefore sought another label for themselves.

I get your point, but I want to mention Apple’s Hide My Email feature. It’s not 100% perfect, and its privacy would surely not survive a government request, but it allows you to use temporary emails that are foolproof, since they exist on the icloud.com domain.

Other email providers should provide this easy obfuscated alias email address

What stops you from getting a SIM card and validating as many gmail accounts as possible?
[flagged]
Yes, anonymity always attracts bad actors. But should we therefore ban anonymity for everyone?
No. Let's prosecute the bad actors and be done.

I noticed the cock.li home page doesn't explain which users are targeted by what it calls crimes, or what these crimes are.

> can't behave like a good netizen

Who decides how a good netizen has to behave?

Maybe it should start with "don't make misogynistic, racist or antisemitic jokes in your domains"?
Wouldn’t that be one for the NICs to enforce?
No, not where should it start.

Whether that behaviour is acceptable is not the question. In my opinion it is not, but I don't think I should decide because a whole lot of things that are widely seen as very acceptable I would place under bad for the internet as well.

If you throw around an idea as strong as that of a "good netizen" I am much more interested in where it ends.

Are the Tor developers good netizens?

I don't know, I'm not familiar with all the online activities of Tor developers
None of your sources list the reason. What was the misdeed that VC commit, that he got kicked out for?

That question is not serious, because the "official" reason happened at our assembly and we knew dodger lied, at least, in this point.

Also dodger lied that it was VC's assembly. It was ours.

>Who can't behave like a good netizen deserves getting kicked off the Internet.

Impressive how much the left of today has in common with fascism from the past.

But pay attention, if stuff rotates 180 degrees "your side" is the one not behaving.

They are doing the right thing by being against the baddies. And they are so strongly opposed to the baddies that they sometimes forget to question their own ideas and actions. Because, after all, they are against the baddies, so they must be good?
Every "leader" thinks he is against the bad guys, and the self-proclaimed "good guys" always win. ;)

“History is always written by the winners. When two cultures clash, the loser is obliterated, and the winner writes the history books-books which glorify their own cause and disparage the conquered foe. As Napoleon once said, 'What is history, but a fable agreed upon?”

― Dan Brown

I was making fun of mschuster91, who is a very good person. I hope they would at some point start to ask themselves the right questions.
They should question questioning the nigge.rs domain?

You're not even putting any straw in your strawman!

You might want to look up "the paradox of tolerance", instead of rehashing the same "if I can't threaten people I'm bring oppressed" bullshit.
>if I can't threaten people

With domainnames?

>that is why we are talking to you right now, instead of beating the shit out of you

How can you think you the righteous and morally correct one in this conversation after writing something like this. owning nigge.rs might be distasteful to say the least but there is no domain name you could possibly rank above threats of physical violence.

> >that is why we are talking to you right now, instead of beating the shit out of you

I have never written this.

True. I quoted from the article of the first tweet you linked to. In hindsight I should've phrased differently instead of saying you

I meant to address people in general that share this worldview.

There is also posteo.de I won't judge how they compare exactly in terms of privacy, but their transparency reports always seem reasonable and I am a happy user for over 10 years now. I guess you can't pay in crypto yet, but you can pay in cash[1] (which might get tricky if you are from a non-eu country). Well worth the 1€/month to me.

Before donating, you may want to consider that the guy operating this service is not just known for operating anonymous email (something I can sympathize with), but also for racist jokes.
Source? Helpful claim but serious enough it should come with evidence imo.
And ngl, some of them were pretty funny.
>racist jokes

Gosh! Thank god you told me! I was going to use cock.li which has email domains such as: cumallover.me, dicksinhisan.us, horsefucker.org, dicksinmyan.us. But now that I know the owner has made racist jokes, which we all know that only bad people do, I'll certainly have nothing to do with this service!

Oh no, not the racist jokes!

We cannot joke about serious things like society problems, economy, death, relationships and politics - this is serious business only!

(/s in case anyone is dense enough to not get it)

Oh no.... burn the witch! Obviously anyone who makes bad jokes must be cancelled!
If I followed this link, would I end up on a list?
you're in IT.

you're already on multiple lists.

The site was taken down earlier today. Mail service remained up for some time. Sent myself a test email - seems I managed to migrate most of my emails over just in time as I'm no longer getting mail.

I used cock.li since about a few months after its initial opening. It was reliable enough and I trusted Vincent had his heart in the right place.

Even if it comes back up - I have no plans to migrate anything back. I've been self-hosting my email for a few years now but never took the time to reset my email everywhere until today. I wish I started about an hour sooner than I did as there are 2 accounts now stuck in potential limbo assuming the domain doesn't get moved elsewhere or temporarily hosted so people have time to migrate away from it.

So long and thanks for all the fish.
