The Onion didn't put up the money to make the purchase. They tried some dodgy legal maneuver where they pledge to pay later, and that the money Alex has to pay in damages are going to fund that payment.

The Onion also did not make the highest bid in the auction.

The whole thing is sketchy AF.

I couldn't be more pleased with this outcome, and I haven't seen anything to suggest that this is less than entirely legitimate.
