I think there was plenty of financial writing on the wall, even without considering physical or practical aspects of the vehicle. For example:
1. Tesla was imposing a no-resale restriction on customers to punish them if they sold within a year. (TBF, it could have been motivated by stopping scalpers, but I doubt it.)
2. Tesla refuses to take that model as an exchange or trade-in.
Stuff like this suggests that from the very beginning Tesla knew their product's pricing was inflated by blind hype and not sustainable (even the standards of automobiles, a depreciating asset) hence the measures to artificially prop it up.
