Sounds remarkably like a number of airliner disasters caused by over-automated and confusing cockpits.
Such as?
737 MAX 8 disasters
Those were because of non-redundant critical sensor and poor communication, not so much because of over-automation.
It automated the feel of the aircraft to resemble 737s of old, to the point of overriding pilot input. And it was done incorrectly though single points of failure and outsourced low quality labor.
What engineer builds an autopilot system which cannot be easily override when manually making course adjustments though (or at least respond with a clear warning that the new input was not expected in its current state)

The article seems to go out of the way to not mention the captain or by name.
Because topics like DEI might creep into the carefully crafted narrative and ruin it.
Unless they fit the criteria, we're not supposed to talk about incompetent people in positions of power.
