For me (and this is a small one), it's not to touch the build plate with your hands. I started having really bad adhesion and had never been told that it was the oil from my hands touching the plate.
I had that in my notes but forgot. Will add it!
1. Learn you slicer settings! Support setting in particular can make a huge difference

2. Different brands of filament may need different printing temperatures.

3. Use printables, thingiverse, cult3d, yeggi, etc to find models to print :-)

4. ABS fumes are poisonous (formaldehyde)
