The Birth of Netflix: A Journey with Marc Randolph
As Netflix began to grow, they caught the attention of Amazon, which at the time was expanding beyond books into music and movies. Jeff Bezos invited Marc and Reed to discuss a potential acquisition.
"We flew up to Amazon and were ushered into this building... In comes Jeff Bezos, and we begin to have this conversation about what is Netflix and what's it all about."
Jeff offered to buy Netflix for a figure in the low eight figures.
"He said, 'I just want to set your expectation that in the event we decide to do something, our offer is probably going to be in the low eight figures.' And we guessed that was probably going to be $15 to $30 million."
Despite the tempting offer, Marc and Reed believed in Netflix's potential and decided not to sell.
"At the same time, we felt we had already solved the big problems... We weren't quite ready to let Jeff Bezos take over."
