Eventually media companies will force us all to wear smart glasses so they will know who to sue for royalties when we come up with anything new.
TLDR: All AI lab companies train on the pile (which contains data from opensubtitleS)
Was there ever a doubt? Imagine how useless an LLM would be if it wasn't allow to know anything about media after 1928?

seems everyone expects AI to be the digital equivalent of that overly-sheltered home school kid that can name every state and capital and the year each entered the union but if you quip "make them an offer they can't refuse" they just stare at you blankly. And that is not a kid I would hire as a screenplay writer.

also not like humans haven't been producing derivative dreck without AI for ages.

I think you know that many creative individuals and organizations are not necessarily objecting to writing from their property being used. They are objecting to it being used to power a multi-billion dollar (multi-trillion if we’re honest) industry without compensation or credit.
I'd like to train myself on this "The Atlantic" story, but I've been blocked by a paywall.
