Interesting story but “At least half a dozen false alarms” out of 300k isn’t a “deluge.” Sure, lots of money spent to answer the false alarms but who knows how many lives were saved through the campaign.
You must not spend a lot of time reading Hackaday. Nothing against them, but little idiosyncrasies like this show up all the time.
Scratch and sniff knickers and the arse panic more like!
Some magazines went through this phase too. Texas Monthly produces some of the best journalism in the US, but I had to stop reading it in the late 90s because it contained scratch and sniff perfume ads that made the magazine smell like a bordello.

Fortunately they seem to have stopped doing that.
