The article doesn't speculate on the causes, but I will: it's probably the phones. Can't do 'the drugs' if scrolling tiktoks 12 hours a day and never leave the house
I think "Fent in everything" and the reduction of things like a rave/club culture plays a huge role. A lot of drugs, at least in the introductory stage, are profoundly social. Putting aside the perceived value of social media, it's also true that a lot of youthful drug use is like youthful vandalism... it's a product of boredom. Take away the boredom, and you reduce the risk of people taking extreme measures to relieve it.
Sounds like school in adolescence was the gateway drug. Removing it broke the cycle.
