Ask HN: Hacker News hacked?

I just received this email from info@ycombinator.com:

  New Hacker News pw: D1T8SJ5P

That's it--no explanation and a suspicious shortening of 'password' to 'pw'. I immediately smelled 'scam', but I tried it out and it worked (subsequently changing my password). What gives? Anyone else receive this?
