I didn't realize phrasing questions in terms of "I don't follow" or "clarify for me" to diplomatically avoid saying "you're mistaken/confused/don't know what you're talking about" is Silicon Valley language.
Especially in the context of working with someone to help them solve their problems,
avoiding antagonistic accusations of ignorance seems like a good social skill.
Talking with Silicon Valley colleagues I understood most phrases. Big exception was football. I don't follow that sport, don't know the rules, filter it from social media. "We need to bring the project beyond the 50(?) yard line". Is that the middle?
