I havent used mathstackexchange in a couple of years. I am glad I grew out of that phase. Now DeepSeek is killing that sort of math socialization. Nobody has to deal with that sort of ego.

OP is talking about people in the math department of an elite university. I've seen a lot of that online, but math people I've known in person have usually been kind and gentle souls. Maybe it's because I've only been at middling state schools. Other commenters there remark on the same thing. I wonder if in general a math department at a good state school might be a healthier environment.
Not a reason to quit undergrad as a junior but a great reason to not start grad school.
Funny I was telling math grad students about to graduate about how many of the people I knew who got the most out of a PhD were more interested in teaching than research. Might give you 150 points of GRE advantage in applications if the selection committee were smart about it.
