The National Weather Service is a division of the NOAA, and the National Hurricane Center is part of the NWS. Altogether, they are crucial for hurricane prediction, hurricane path prediction, and engage the public and emergency managers. This is a vital service, and I think many people will be surprised by such a steep cut.
It seems premature to me to predict that the National Hurricane Center's services will be interrupted by the cuts that are likely coming to NOAA. If I worked there, I would be much more worried about losing coworkers in, say, climate education and outreach.
Perhaps the idea is that individual states (such as Florida and Louisiana) that are frequently impacted by hurricanes can invest their own resources towards hurricane forecasting so states like Wyoming and Utah aren’t forcibly taxed to contribute to a socialist national hurricane forecasting program.
