I’ve been wanting to read about the political history of Venice including the office of Doge ever since I got addicted to Crusader King 2 many years ago but I never got around to reading about it. (I have since stopped playing that game haha)
I do find it fascinating that our world moved away from City States to Nation States. I believe the only truly independent City State in the modern world is Singapore. Sometimes I wonder why that is. It’s not clear why the Nation State would not only be the dominant political form but pretty much the only political form in the world. Just something I think about every now and then.
