This is really cool except that I have no idea what any of these things would look like from a satellite image.

Could you possibly have "examples" of a base camp / avalanche / etc?

I can't tell if something is an avalanche or just a river / runoff.

Best of luck finding your friends!

They aren't my friends. Thought it was very sad/interesting though.
Sign up? Why can't I just browse it anonymously?
I think you can actually, just x out of the sign up.
It'd be helpful if the navigation didn't obscure the entire top left corner of the map.
You can drag it, just like Google Maps.
I'm quite amazed that this is even possible to do, as it needs recent satellite imagery both from after they allegedly hiked there and from shortly before, to be able to make comparisons.

Is there some place where one can check the recency of all the available sources of satellite imagery from all over the world?

This is great. Really clever idea.

But the Space bar for showing before/after doesn't work on Safari or Chrome.

space bar doesn't seem to work for me (ubuntu, firefox and chrome)
Sad news: the lost climbers, Gil and Ben, have been found dead. (See OP link for more.)
