McCarthyism already occurred when researchers felt forced to toe the DEI party line "to not be excluded". Even math researchers, as we see in this link.
That said, I agree that the intrusion of politicians (of both parties) into science is troubling, but I don't know where a researcher could go to avoid it.
I think there’s a big difference between an ill conceived line about DEI… and politician’s gathering lists of woke research with people’s names on them…
Let alone the the rhetoric about “disloyal” and “Marxist” from the administration as a whole.
One is foolish, the other fits McCarthyism word for word.
You can whatabout with something that is obviously lopsided more in one direction, or you can call out the BS on both sides. Either way, we can see the bias.
The Trump administration certainly loves to describe their own actions in the context of complaining about anyone who they think even might oppose them. More of a confession than reality.
